A different default experience by age
OpenAI introduced ChatGPT for Teens on August 18. Users who state they are 13–17, or whom the system estimates to be under 18, are automatically placed in the teen experience. It combines Study Mode, reminders that redirect apparent homework shortcuts toward guided steps, quizzes, learning visualizations and Study Hours that can make Study Mode the default during selected periods.
Age-appropriate protections cover higher-risk areas including self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities and explicit content. Linked parents can manage Quiet Hours and selected settings and receive limited notifications in certain high-risk situations. The experience also adds break reminders and cues that identify the system as AI, while its model behavior is intended to avoid romantic language, emotional-dependence cues and claims of feelings or consciousness.
Product policy is not outcome evidence
The announcement describes design choices and internal early evaluations; it does not independently establish long-term learning gains or harm reduction. Age-estimation errors, privacy around parental alerts, school rules, regional consent requirements and escalation to human support still need scrutiny. The product should not substitute for a teacher, clinician or crisis professional.
