ChatGPT Pro and Business Gain Conditional API Credits

Eligible Pro and Business subscriptions can claim API credits. The $500 monthly ceiling depends on the plan or paid seats, with activation and expiry rules.

Turn a subscription benefit into a small experiment

OpenAI's October 28, 2026 update offers eligible Pro and Business subscribers up to $500 monthly in API credits, varying by plan or paid seats. Claiming requires a paid subscription at least seven days old, organization ownership and activation. Expiry rules apply; API-key Codex is excluded and ChatGPT limits remain unchanged. Confirm eligibility and expiry in the official guide.

Test a workflow, not the size of the grant

Our editorial suggestion is to choose one checkable task, such as document classification or drafting support replies, rather than aim to spend the entire allowance. Record a manual baseline and acceptance criteria, then process a small sample. Track corrections and failed retries alongside output quality. A grant is not proof of business value or a reason to upload sensitive material indiscriminately.

We suggest measuring cost per accepted task: count all credits consumed, including free ones, divide by outputs that pass review, and record human checking time separately. Consider whether the workflow still makes sense without the promotional balance. This is an editorial evaluation framework, not a vendor-measured saving or a profitability claim.

Before starting, inspect the linked organization, actual grant, expiry and Auto Recharge setting. Set a trial budget and stopping rule. Preventing an unexpected paid top-up matters more than finding extra tasks merely to exhaust a free balance.
