A chip company takes ownership of the open-model hub
NVIDIA announced on September 3 that it agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12,930,300,000. Hugging Face has become a central hub for sharing, evaluating and deploying models, datasets and demo applications. NVIDIA's announcement describes more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators using over three million models, 500,000 datasets and one million applications.
NVIDIA promises that Hugging Face will retain its brand and remain open to the user's choice of model, framework, cloud and inference provider. It says NVIDIA hardware will not be required and support for multi-cloud, multi-accelerator, open-source and open-weight development will continue.
A stated pledge is different from its execution
The announcement confirms an acquisition agreement, not that every integration step is complete. The post does not provide full detail on closing timing, regulatory conditions or future pricing and governance for individual services. The open-platform pledge will need to be tested through API pricing, search and recommendation neutrality, optimization for competing hardware and data policy.
Developers have no immediate reason to migrate solely from the announcement, but should preserve model and dataset versions and licenses outside one service and audit whether production deployment depends on a single provider.
