What was announced
OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Academic Researchers on July 29, 2026. The program gives selected university researchers in science, mathematics, and engineering free access to frontier models across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. It starts with 10,000 researchers this summer and targets 100,000 by 2027.
What participants receive
Access includes the GPT-5.6 family, including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro at launch, higher limits, larger context windows, deep research, more than 75 life-science skills, and research-data connectors. OpenAI says workspace data is not used for model training by default, and approved researchers can invite up to four verified collaborators from the same institution.
The program is part of a commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 for external scientific research. OpenAI also reports that about 1.3 million people use ChatGPT for advanced science and mathematics each week, producing roughly 8.4 million messages.
Eligibility and limits
This is not an unrestricted free tier for every researcher. Applicants must verify affiliation with an eligible degree-granting research institution and describe active research and intended use. Institutions already using ChatGPT Edu will coordinate access through their workspace.
Model output is not scientific evidence. Calculations, source data, citations, and conclusions need reproducible checks and domain-expert review. Unpublished, personal, or clinical data remains subject to institutional ethics and data-handling rules.
